HC Deb 18 June 1912 vol 39 cc1498-9
89. Mr. GUINEY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether the Local Government Board for Ireland have received an unanimous request from the members of the Newmarket, county Cork, Pensions Committee asking them to send an inspector to inquire into the cases of Michael Sheehy, Glenakeel, John Angland, Knocknanagh, and Maurice Angland, Knocknanagh, with a view to estimating the means of the applicants; is he aware that the committee have already asked for and received from the applicants an estimate of their income made by a licensed valuer, as these cases are frequently engaging the attention of the members of the committee; and will the request be complied with?

Mr. BIRRELL

A request has been made to the Local Government Board by the local pension committee to have an inspector sent down to estimate the means of Michael Sheehy. On receipt of all the documents in the case the Board will be in a position to determine whether such inspection is necessary. The Board are not aware that any estimate has been furnished in connection with the other two cases, as the papers relating to them have not yet been furnished to the Board.

90. Mr. GUINEY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether, in view of the fact that the following four applicants for old age pensions, William Daly, No. on Register 2,269, Mary Barry, Register No. 2,254, Eliza Forde, Register No. 2,335, and Bridget Begley, Register No. 2,391, cannot produce certificates of their age, all of whom are believed by the members of the Charleville Sub-committee to be over seventy years of age, and with which opinion the local pension officer agrees, he will direct the Local Government Board for Ireland to send an inspector to interview those applicants in order that their cases may be immediately dealt with?

Mr. BIRRELL

No appeals have yet been received in connection with the claims of William Daly and Mary Barry. Appeals have been received against the pensions granted to Eliza Forde and Bridget Begley, on the grounds that no evidence of age can be produced by the claimants. These two cases are at present under consideration, and when all the necessary documents have been furnished the Local Government Board will be in a position to determine whether an inspection will be necessary.
