HC Deb 17 June 1912 vol 39 cc1306-7
41. Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

asked what amount of money has been expended on emigration since the Unemployed Workmen Act, 1905, came into force out of public funds, out of the rates, and other sources, respectively?

Mr. BURNS

The amount expended on emigration under the Unemployed Workmen Act, 1905, from the coming into operation of that Act up to the 31st March last, is £193,219. Of this amount, £36,356 was met out of the Parliamentary Grant, and the balance was defrayed out of other sources. The expenditure by boards of guardians on emigration for the years 1906– 1911, both inclusive, is £59,782.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

The expenditure includes children, I suppose?

Mr. BURNS

Yes.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Will the right hon. Gentleman say whether the money expended upon emigration under the Unemployed Workmen Act was expended out of public funds voted by this House for the purposes of unemployment generally?

Mr. BURNS

The money spent on emigration during the years I have mentioned has been spent from taxation, from rates, and from money voluntarily subscribed.
