HC Deb 12 June 1912 vol 39 c854
37. Dr. CHAPPLE

asked whether, in view of the difficulty of administering the Tonga group of islands, the right hon. Gentleman will enter into communication with the New Zealand Government with a view to dealing with the group in a way similar to that which has proved so successful in the case of the Cook Islands?

Mr. HARCOURT

The relations between this country and the kingdom of Tonga are regulated by treaties under which the internal administration is in the hands of the King and Government of Tonga. So long as those treaties last His Majesty's Government are not in a position to consider the making of other arrangements for the administration of the group.
