HC Deb 11 June 1912 vol 39 cc690-1
66. Mr. WILKIE

asked whether postmen are being employed at the Dundee Post Office on duties proper to sorting clerks and telegraphists; that the surveyor has stated in reply to representations that this was done to avoid overtime; and whether he will direct that postmen so employed shall be paid the scales of wages proper to sorting clerks and telegraphists?

Captain NORTON

I understand that the arrangement was made in consequence of a vacancy for a sorting clerk and telegraphist which it is not possible to fill at present. Postmen acting as substitutes for sorting clerks and telegraphists receive the pay of sorting clerks and telegraphists at one step above the minimum of the scale, or their own wages, whichever are greater.
