HC Deb 22 July 1912 vol 41 cc809-10
71. Mr. MACPHERSON

asked the Secretary to the Treasury, whether he can now give a reply to the requests made by friendly societies for a Grant towards the expense involved in schemes required under Section 72 of the National Insurance Act?

Mr. MASTERMAN

A special Grant to friendly societies is proposed in the Civil Service Supplementary Estimates circulated on Saturday, for the work which the Act requires these societies to undertake under Section 72. It is intended that the Grant should be distributed by the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies in proportion to the estimated cost of the schemes, and that it should not exceed one guinea for each separate valuation plus 1d. for each member affected.

Mr. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

Under what Section of the Act is that Grant permitted, or by what other authority do the Government propose to make it?

Mr. MASTERMAN

It will be made first of all by the authority of the Supplementary Estimates, and then the Appropriation Act.
