HC Deb 26 February 1912 vol 34 c1002
Sir CLEMENT KINLOCH - COOKE

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he could give the number of members belonging to trade unions which give sick benefits, and the number of persons belonging to friendly societies giving sick benefits?

Mr. ROBERTSON

According to a special analysis of the financial rules of all trade unions in 1908—registered and unregistered—with a total membership of 2,380,000, there were 950,000 members eligible for sick and accident benefits, including 222,000 who were eligible for industrial accident benefit only. As regards friendly societies, I must refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
