HC Deb 22 February 1912 vol 34 c741
Mr. FERENS

asked the Postmaster-General whether he can make any announcement in regard to a reduction in press telegraph rates to India and South Africa corresponding to those already granted to other parts of the Empire?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I am glad to be able to say that the Eastern Telegraph Company have arranged to reduce the rate for Press telegrams of a non-urgent character to Cape Town and Durban from 9d. to 3½d. a word, with an additional charge of a farthing a word for other places in South Africa. This reduction will come into force on 1st March. I hope that a reduction in the rate for Press telegrams to India will also shortly be effected.

Mr. HARRY LAWSON

Will that rate be reciprocal? Will it be the same from South Africa?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

Perhaps the hon. Member will give me notice. I think that that will be the case.

Earl WINTERTON

Does the arrangement extend to Rhodesia as well as to the Union?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I shall be glad to have notice.
