HC Deb 21 February 1912 vol 34 cc614-5
Mr. R. HARCOURT

asked whether, in view of the criticism directed against the Lord Chamberlain for forbidding the performance of certain plays, the Government will propose the repeal of the Act of Parliament, now seventy years old, under which these duties are imposed on him and introduce alternative legislation, as recommended by the Joint Select Committee appointed on the Motion of the Government and presided over by the Postmaster-General?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. McKenna)

The Prime Minister has asked me to answer this question. I see no prospect of introducing legislation on this subject this Session.

Mr. R. HARCOURT

Has the right hon. Gentleman's attention been directed to the reception last night of a comedy by His Majesty's Examiner of Plays?

Mr. SPEAKER

It is not the duty of the Home Secretary to attend all first nights.
