HC Deb 20 February 1912 vol 34 cc430-1
Mr. HUNT

asked whether, in view of the character of the evidence given at a recent trial before the Supreme Court at Leipsic of a British subject charged with espionage, His Majesty's Government will make friendly and informal inquiry with a view of securing a new trial or a revision of the proceedings by the German Government?

Sir E. GREY

It would not serve any useful purpose for His Majesty's Government to attempt to intervene officially in this case.

Mr. KING

asked whether communications have passed between the British and German Foreign Offices relative to the case of Mr. Bertrand Stewart, convicted at Leipzic for espionage?

Sir E. GREY

I can make no further statement on this subject.

Mr. KING

asked what amounts are annually expended by the Governments of Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Russia, respectively, on secret service?

Sir E. GREY

I will endeavour to obtain the information desired by the hon. Member as far as it may be available in the published budgets of the countries named.
