HC Deb 17 December 1912 vol 45 cc1280-1
38. Mr. NEWDEGATE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can state how much petrol is used in this country; how much comes from the United Kingdom and how much from foreign sources; and whether he will free home-manufactured motor spirit from taxation so as to secure to this country an adequate supply of such material immune from liability to capture by an enemy's forces in time of war?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

The quantities of Motor Spirit Duty paid in the last financial year were:—

Gallons
Imported 60,304,963
Home made 1,340,805
Total 61,645,768
As regards the last part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Birkenhead on the J 9th ultimo, and to my observations in this House of Commons on the 2nd August last, when there was a Debate on the same subject.
