HC Deb 01 April 1912 vol 36 c860
Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked the President of the Local Government Board the reason of the action of the Local Government Board in refusing to sanction the proposal of the Wandsworth Board of Guardians to pay a minimum wage of 30s. per week to their male staff living outside the Board's institution?

The PRESIDENT Of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Burns)

I may point out that the remuneration which the guardians propose to pay to the officers in question does not require my sanction, except so far as the charge on the Metropolitan Common Poor Fund is concerned. I have received a further letter from the Wandsworth guardians in regard to this matter, in which they suggest that the services rendered by the officers in question warrant the proposed increase upon merits in each case. I am accordingly giving the matter further consideration in the light of this suggestion.
