HC Deb 01 April 1912 vol 36 cc849-50
Sir REGINALD POLE-CAREW

asked the honourable Member for St. George's-in-the-East, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether a site for the memorial to King Edward VII. had been considered in St. James's Park, west of the Horse Guards Parade, and facing the gateway of the Horse Guards?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN (Lord of the Treasury)

Yes; this site was considered by the Committee, who decided that it was not well adapted for the purpose.

Colonel YATE

May I ask the hon. Member if the House will have an opportunity of expressing an opinion as to the allegorical figures on (he memorial?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN

A debate on the memorial, plans of which were placed in the Tea Room, took place in the House last Wednesday.

Lord BALCARRES

Is it considered that the House of Commons has had an opportunity of expressing an opinion on the subject, and, if so, what is the opinion which the hon. Member thinks the House of Commons has expressed?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN

An opportunity was promised and it was given. I should not like to give any further pledge without consultation with the proper authorities.
