HC Deb 26 October 1911 vol 30 cc305-6
Mr. VINCENT KENNEDY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland how many memorials have been received at the Irish Office in favour of uniform time for Ireland; were those documents influentially signed, and have any memorials against the proposed change been received; is he aware that, following the example of France, Spain and Portugal have issued proclamations adopting uniform time, to come into force on 1st January, 1912; and will he, in the circumstances, give effect to the prayer in the various memorials received, by, if necessary, introducing legislation?

Mr. BIRRELL

Twenty-five memorials have been received in support of the proposed change and none against it. A number of chambers of commerce, and county and urban councils are in favour of the proposal to adopt Greenwich time. I am aware that France and Spain have already adopted it. As regards the concluding paragraph of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to my reply which I have just given to the question of the hon. and gallant Member for East Down on this subject.
