HC Deb 29 November 1911 vol 32 c411
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Postmaster-General whether he has received a request from the Southall-Norwood Urban District Council to provide telegraphic facilities at the New Dudley Road Post Office; whether he is aware that such office is three-quarters of a mile from the nearest telegraph office, and is, moreover, situate in the heart of the factory district of Southall; and, if so, whether he can see his way to grant this boon to the locality?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

I regret to find that, as the Southall-Norwood Urban District Council were informed on 2nd September last, the establishment of a telegraph office at the Dudley Road Post Office, Southall, would not be warranted by the local circumstances. The nearest telegraph office—that in King Street—is only 550 yards distant, and the factories to which the hon. Member refers are connected with the telephone system, and can dictate and receive their telegrams by telephone direct to the Southall Head Post Office.
