HC Deb 28 November 1911 vol 32 c201
Mr. BOTTOMLEY

asked whether, before the issue of the recent order prohibiting boxing contests for money prizes amongst sailors and marines, any of the commanding officers were consulted?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

As I stated in a reply on November 22nd, no order has been issued prohibiting boxing contests in His Majesty's Navy. What has happened is that instructions were recently issued that men should not be allowed to accept engagements to appear in any regular public performance for hire.

Mr. BOTTOMLEY

Before this order was issued was the Commanding Officer consulted?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I think the suggestion which led to the order came from the Commanding Officer.

Mr. BOTTOMLEY

Was it from the Rev. Mr. Meyer?

Dr. MACNAMARA

No, Sir, certainly not.

Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

Is it the intention to abolish Boxing Day?
