HC Deb 27 November 1911 vol 32 cc13-4
Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why so small a percentage of ex-Service men, namely, 18.12, are employed in the Broad-moor Lunatic Asylum; and whether, in view of the fact that many ex-Navy and ex-Army men are well qualified for such posts as- those of attendants and warders, he will give instructions that this percentage of ex-Service men should be raised to at least 50 per cent. as soon as possible as vacancies occur?

Mr. McKENNA

The authorities at Broadmoor during the year ended 31st October last took into their employment all candidates who had served in the Navy or Army and who were qualified and available for immediate employment. Of twelve persons appointed seven were ex-Service men, so that the proportion of 50 per cent. suggested by the hon. Member was actually exceeded.

Colonel YATE

May I ask if the proportion may be kept up?

Mr. McKENNA

We had last year all that applied. I cannot answer for the number who will apply in future years.
