HC Deb 20 November 1911 vol 31 c822
Mr. HINDS

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether, in view of the fact that butter imported into the United Kingdom from foreign countries is offered for sale as British butter, he will consider the desirability of introducing legislation requiring every person dealing in such butter to attach to each parcel exposed for sale a label indicating that it is of foreign manufacture?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I shall be glad to inquire into any specific case in which there is any reason to suppose that the description British is being applied falsely to imported butter with a view to proceedings under the Merchandise Marks Act.

Mr. KILBRIDE

Will the right hon. Gentleman inquire from the Vice-President of the Board of Agriculture in Ireland whether foreign butter is not sold in this country very often as Irish, and will he take proceedings?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I shall be very glad to have any information which my right hon. Friend can give me on the subject.

Mr. HINDS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that foreign butter is sold as Welsh butter or mixed?
