HC Deb 13 November 1911 vol 31 c18
Mr. CRUMLEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that cruelty and injury are inflicted on pigs on their unloading at Holyhead owing to the narrow passage leading from the boat to the loading bank, which is often blocked by cattle and pigs; and will he take steps to secure the provision of sufficient unloading accommodation at the port?

Mr. BUXTON

The landing place for pigs at Holyhead is within the docks belonging to the London and North Western Railway Company. I am informed by the company that the place has been frequently visited by Government cattle inspectors and by officers of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and that no complaint has been made as to the passage or of cruelty or injuries to the pigs. The company add that new cattle pens are now being provided which will greatly facilitate the movement of pigs and other live stock.

Mr. CRUMLEY

Will the right hon. Gentleman instruct his inspector to see how the boats are discharged, and to see the passage leading from the boats to the landing bank?

Mr. BUXTON

I am certain the Government inspector will see that the matter is properly dealt with and that proper facilities are afforded.
