HC Deb 13 November 1911 vol 31 cc24-5
Mr. KEIR HARDIE

asked how many meetings of the Advisory Committee have been held since 17th August in connection with the wages dispute at Dowlais; what investigations have been made to learn what wages are being paid in other parts of the district in which the Dowlais works are situate; whether any decision has yet been come to on the point; and, if not, when such decision may be expected?

Mr. BUXTON

I am informed that a meeting of the Fair-Wages Advisory Committee was held on 14th September to consider certain questions arising out of the Committee's recommendations and referred to them by the India Office and the Admiralty. The Committee decided that it was necessary to make a local investigation. In the course of their inquiry, which is still in progress, the investigators have visited a number of steel works in South Wales, and they are expected to report to the Committee at an early date.

Mr. KEIR HARDIE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the existence of this advisory committee is simply a pretext to hinder other departments from making concessions?

Mr. BUXTON

I do not at all agree with that. I think it is exactly the other way.
