HC Deb 08 November 1911 vol 30 cc1652-3
Mr. JOHN

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether the tabulation of the Census Returns was now sufficiently advanced to enable him to state respectively the number of people in Wales returned as speaking Welsh only, English only, and as speaking both languages; and whether, in the publication of the Census Returns, he would follow the precedents of Scotland and Ireland and treat Wales, including Monmouthshire, as a separate entity, grouping thereunder the thirteen counties and the county boroughs?

The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Burns)

The results of the tabulation of the Census Returns relating to the languages spoken in Wales and in the county of Monmouth will not be available for some time. It is proposed to issue Divisional Volumes for groups of counties, and one of these volumes will relate to Wales and Monmouthshire.
