HC Deb 25 May 1911 vol 26 c432
Mr. YERBURGH

asked whether St. Helena is a coaling station for the Navy; whether it is at the present time in a defenceless position; and, if so, and in view of its importance as being situated on the direct route to South Africa and, in the event of the Suez Canal being blocked, to India and the East also, whether it is the intention of the Admiralty to provide it with adequate defences?

Mr. McKENNA

The Admiralty recognise the importance of St. Helena, and the necessary steps are being taken to defend it.
