HC Deb 25 May 1911 vol 26 c430
Mr. CROOKS

asked the Prime Minister whether, having regard to the decision of the election judges at East Nottingham that it is not corrupt to give charity by a Member or candidate, he will so arrange to grant a sum sufficiently large from the Exchequer to enable poor men to compete fairly in the matter of charity with wealthy candidates for Parliamentary honours?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

As my right hon. Friend stated yesterday, this matter is under the consideration of the Government.

Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

Can the right hon. Gentleman give us any indication as to whether the Government intend dealing with this question in the present Parliament so as to prevent these gentlemen giving these half-sovereigns and bags of coal away?
