HC Deb 23 May 1911 vol 26 cc130-1
Mr. ASHLEY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he was aware that a letter has been sent to units in the Principality from the headquarters Welsh Division, Territorial Force, Shrewsbury, informing officers commanding that rank and file who wish to attend the investiture of the Prince of Wales at Carnarvon will have to be away three days, that no pay can be given, and that the question of allowances has not yet been settled; whether he was also aware that the proposed allowance is only 1s. 6d. a day each for food; and what steps he proposes to take to enable the rank and file of the Welsh Territorials to take part in a national celebration without serious financial loss?

Colonel SEELY

I am not aware of the issue of this letter, and no such decisions as those which the hon. Member suggests were arrived at by the War Office. It has been decided that on this special occasion, and in view of the unique character of the ceremony of the investure pay and allowances will be issued on the same lines as for the Coronation.

Mr. ASHLEY

If I hand the right hon. Gentleman a copy of the circular will he make investigations, as it is a great discouragement to the men?

Colonel SEELY

Certainly, I shall be much obliged if he will send me a copy or hand it to me.

ARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Will travelling expenses be paid?

Colonel SEELY

Yes.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Will they also be paid in connection with the King's visit to Scotland?

Colonel SEELY

Perhaps the Noble Lord will put down that question on the Paper.
