HC Deb 23 May 1911 vol 26 c144
Viscount HELMSLEY

asked whether, in the month of February last two van-loads of records were removed from the Castle of York to London; by whose authority and for what purpose were they removed; of what do the records in question consist; and whether they are of a, national or local character, or both?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Hobhouse)

Two van-loads of records were removed in March last from York Castle to the Public Record Office under the authority of the Public Record Act (1 and 2 Viet., c. 94, Section 3) by warrant of the Master of the Rolls countersigned by the Lord Chancellor. They consisted of the records of the old undivided Northern Circuit and the modern North-Eastern Circuit of an earlier date than 1890. The question as to their local or national character is one of opinion.

Mr. BUTCHER

Will the records be examined with and such portions of them as are valuable published by the Historical Manuscripts Commission?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I shall make inquiries and communicate with the hon. and learned Member.
