HC Deb 15 May 1911 vol 25 cc1634-5
Mr. CHARLES ROBERTS

asked the Prime Minister whether he can now make any statement about the Whitsuntide holiday?

Sir RANDOLF BAKER

asked a similar question.

The PRIME MINISTER

Perhaps I may be allowed to answer Question 51 by the hon. Member for North Dorset at the same time. We propose to take the Adjournment Motion on Wednesday, 31st May, to take effect on Friday, 2nd June. As a large number of Scottish Members have expressed a strong desire to have an opportunity of discussing the Small Landholders (Scotland) Bill, in the name of the Member for Peebles and Selkirk, on Friday, 2nd June, we propose that Thursday, 1st June, should be devoted to Scottish Estimates, and that the House should sit on Friday, 2nd June, to consider that Bill.

Mr. PICKERSGILL

Will the right hon. Gentleman, before this Motion is brought forward, make his promised proposal altering the practice so that the House may not be precluded by blocking Motions for discussing matters of public importance?

The PRIME MINISTER

The only thing I can do, I am afraid, will be to put down a Motion immediately preceding the Adjournment Motion for the purposes of the day that the Adjournment Motion shall be freed from the rule relating to blocking Motions, and I could only do that if I was assured of the general assent of the House.

Mr. YOUNGER

Shall we have the privilege of the right hon. Gentleman's presence and assistance on the occasion of the discussion of the Scottish Land Bill?

The PRIME MINISTER

I hope so, as a Scottish Member.

Mr. JOHN REDMOND

When will the House re-assemble?

The PRIME MINISTER

I would rat her not say at this moment.

Sir JOHN JARDINE

Will the second Friday be given up altogether to the Scottish Small Holdings Bill?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is a private Members' day.
