HC Deb 04 May 1911 vol 25 c590
Mr. MORTON

asked whether, in consequence of the state of affairs revealed by the Census Returns, the Government proposed to do anything to check the depopulation in the rural districts of Scotland?

The PRIME MINISTER

I can assure my hon. Friend that the Government is fully alive to the gravity of the figures that have been disclosed, but so far as land legislation is concerned I am not in a position to add to the replies I have recently given on the subject.

Mr. FELL

Will the right hon. Gentleman give the same consideration to the smaller towns of Scotland, where industries are dying out and the population is decreasing?

Mr. COOPER

Will the Government consider the question of securing the livelihood of the Scottish people by the imposition of a scientific tariff on imports?
