HC Deb 01 May 1911 vol 25 cc38-9
Mr. MULDOON

asked how many evicted tenants applied for reinstatement in the county of Wicklow; how many have been up to this date passed as qualified and entitled to reinstatement or other holdings; how many have been dealt with in either way; and what was the explanation of the delay?

Mr. BIRRELL

Up to 31st March last 165 applications were received by the Estates Commissioners from persons seeking reinstatement as tenants, or representatives of tenants, evicted from holdings in county Wicklow. After inquiry the Commissioners decided in sixty-six cases to take no action. Twenty-seven applicants have been reinstated in their former holdings or provided with others, twenty-three applications have been noted for consideration in the allotment of untenanted land which the Commissioners hope to acquire, and two will be further considered when the estates come before the Commissioners for sale under the Land Purchase Acts. The remaining applications were not received within the time limited by the Evicted Tenants Act and cannot be dealt with under that Act.

Mr. JOHN ROCHE

asked the Chief Secretary whether the representatives of Patrick Wade, evicted tenant, had applied to the Estates Commissioners for reinstatement to a holding upon the estate of Pierce Joyce, at Aughacleggan, county Galway, at present let on the grazing system; and, if so, would ho direct that Wade be reinstated or provided with an equivalent holding?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Estates Commissioners have received an application from the representatives of. Patrick Wade for reinstatement in a holding formerly occupied by him on the estate of Pierce Joyce, but as the eviction took place more than twenty-five years before the passing of the Irish Land Act, 1903, the applicants do not come within the provisions of the Irish Land Act, 1903, or of the Evicted Tenants Act, 1907, and cannot be dealt with under those Acts.
