HC Deb 01 May 1911 vol 25 cc30-1
Mr. LANSBURY

asked how long the labour master, recently discharged from Belmont workhouse, was engaged in that position; and what was the nature of the breach of discipline he committed before his discharge?

Mr. BURNS

The temporary engagement of the man in question lasted from June, 1910, till February, 1911. The breach of discipline referred to consisted of going on duty under the influence of drink and, it was alleged, roughly treating an inmate. I am informed that the evidence respecting this was very conflicting.

Mr. J. WARD

Is this the man on whose evidence some forty or fifty people in the workhouse were convicted?

Mr. BURNS

No. This man got drunk after he received notice to leave his temporary appointment.
