§ Mr. SCANLANasked the Secretary to the Treasury whether his attention has been directed to the discontent prevailing amongst Excise and Customs officials in consequence of the prolonged delay in issuing the Report of the committee of inquiry, and in settling the question of salaries, an increase in which was promised to the rank and file of the amalgamated service two years ago; whether he can now state when the Report will be issued; and whether, in the meantime, the salaries question will be dealt with and the promised increases made?
§ Mr. HOBHOUSENo promise of increased salaries has been made to Customs and Excise officials. No unavoidable delay in presenting the Report of the Amalgamation Committee has occurred—but until it has been both presented to and considered by the Treasury—which will be done as soon as possible—the question of salaries and conditions of service cannot be otherwise considered.
