HC Deb 22 March 1911 vol 23 cc388-9
Mr. POINTER

asked the Colonial Secretary if he will state the number of immigration cases, tried before Mr. H. W. Pritchard, who has been recently appointed to the magistracy of Princes Town, in the Colony of Trinidad, giving the proportion thrown out, either as not fulfilling the requirements of the law or as being in his opinion, mere means of oppression?

Colonel SEELY

I have no information on the subject, but will inquire.

Mr. POINTER

asked the Colonial Secretary if his attention has been drawn to the increase of tuberculosis in the Colony of Trinidad, there being, according to the latest returns of the Registrar-General, a death rate from that disease in Port-of-Spain of 4.81 per 1,000 of the population; and whether, in view of the suffering endured as a result, especially by the working classes, he intends to take any action in the matter on the lines indicated by the Report of the Commission appointed to inquire into the conditions of tuberculous disease in Ceylon?

Colonel SEELY

The attention of the late Secretary of State was drawn to the prevalance of tuberculosis in Port-of-Spain, and he communicated with the Governor on the subject. The question of remedial measures is now being considered by the Colonial Government.
