HC Deb 22 March 1911 vol 23 cc407-8
Mr. EDMUND HARVEY

asked whether, in view of the importance of obtaining accurate information as to the amount of adolescent labour engaged in the various forms of industry, the President of the Local Government Board will arrange, in publishing the Census figures, for a return showing the exact ages of all persons under twenty years of age engaged in each industry, or at least make provision for fuller information than can be afforded by sub-dividing the persons engaged in the various industries into periods of five or ten years?

Mr. BURNS

It has been arranged that up to twenty-one the ages of persons engaged in the various occupations should be given in the Census Report by single years.

Mr. TOBIN

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether any, and what, means are available to him for the insertion in the form of Census Return of a column under which information could be given as to whether the persons named in the return are unemployed, and the cause or causes to which each of such persons attributes such unemployment; and, if such means are available, whether he will avail himself thereof?

Mr. BURNS

I do not consider that the census schedule could contain such a column as is suggested. It will be remembered that a proposal that particulars as to unemployment should be obtained in the Census was considered in Committee of this House when the Bill was under discussion, and was negatived.
