HC Deb 21 March 1911 vol 23 c235
Dr. ADDISON

asked the Home Secretary whether he was aware that the Union Cartage Company, the Hay's Wharf and Dock Company, and other meat cartage firms, employ men in carting meat from the docks under such conditions that they are not able to go to bed for proper rest from Sunday morning until Saturday morning; and what action he proposes to take in the matter?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Churchill)

I have no official information with regard to this matter, which does not fall within the scope of the Factory Act or other Acts for the regulation of labour. I have communicated, however, with the two firms mentioned in the question. The Union Cartage Company inform me that the allegations are unfounded so far as they are concerned, and that it is entirely at the option of the men whether they work overtime when there is an extra pressure of business. The Hay's Wharf and Dock Company also deny the allegations.
