HC Deb 20 March 1911 vol 23 cc30-1
Mr. GRETTON

asked the President of the Board of Education—(1) whether he would state when the result of the certificate examination for teachers in public elementary schools is expected to be published; and (2) whether he would say for what reason there has been more than three months' delay before the publication of the result of the certificate examination for teachers in public elementary schools, which was held at the end of November last?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

It has been necessary first to deal with the results of Part I. of the preliminary examination for the certificate, which was held at, approximately, the same date as the certificate examination. This course was necessary because the results of Part I. of the preliminary examination affect the admission of students to Part II., which will be held shortly. The Board hope, however, now to be able to issue the results of the certificate examination almost immediately.

Mr. FITZROY

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he will give an assurance that, in cases where head teachers of elementary schools are employed in work connected with the taking of the Census, Government inspectors shall not visit such schools during the head teachers' absence?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I am not prepared to give any such assurance in general terms, nor do I see what purpose it would serve. In any case where a school is closed and notice of the closure has been given as required by Article 56 of the Code it is fairly safe to assume that no inspector will waste his time by paying a visit of inspection.
