HC Deb 20 March 1911 vol 23 cc7-8
Captain O'NEILL

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether the Commissioners of National Education in Ireland have passed a resolution to the effect that a fall of ten units in the average which warrants the appointment of an assistant teacher in national schools be allowed before the salary is withdrawn; and, if so, whether he would give an undertaking that this proposal shall be made effective?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative; the matter is still under consideration.

Mr. JOHN O'CONNOR

Has it been reported to the right hon. Gentleman that at a meeting of the Committee of the Catholic Association and Clerical School Managers, representing three-fourths of the National Schools in Ireland, a resolution was passed complaining that where 2,000 trained assistant teachers should now be employed, there is a similar number of untrained junior assistant female mistresses employed to the detriment of education in Ireland?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

No such resolution has reached me.
