§ Mr. WILLIAM THORNEasked the President of the Board of Trade if he will make representations to the directors of the Metropolitan District Railway Company to put on additional trains at a later period at night on the portion of the line running to the East End of London?
Mr. BUXTONIf my hon. Friend will let me know at what times, and between which stations he thinks that later trains are required, I shall be glad to consider whether I can usefully make any representations to the company. It is, however, to be borne in mind that in the case of an underground electrical railway it is eminently desirable that there should be some interval during the night when no trains are running in which work necessary for the due maintenance of the permanent way can be safely carried out.
§ Mr. WILLIAM THORNEDoes not the Great Eastern Railway Company run trains all night from Liverpool Street to Walthamstow, and should not the wise men of the East have the same consideration?
Mr. BUXTONThere is some difference between a line like the Great Eastern and underground electric railways. Repairs of various sorts are necessary from time to time, and the only time they can do them is when the trains are not running. If the hon. Member can give me any facts as to the later trains I shall be very glad to consider them.
