HC Deb 14 March 1911 vol 22 c2047
Sir REGINALD POLE-CAREW

asked The secretary of State for War whether, in the case of adjutants of Yeomanry, the pay of officers appointed between 12th July, 1910, and February, 1911, at the rate of 5s. per diem, has since January last been reduced by 2s. 6d. per diem; whether they have been ordered to refund the extra 2s. 6d. they drew from the dates of their appointment to the publication of the Army Order of February last; and whether he proposes to take any steps, seeing that such treatment is not likely to stimulate greater competition for the position of adjutant?

Mr. HALDANE

Officers appointed before February last, not having been warned of the reduction, will be allowed the old rate.

Earl WINTERTON

Have they not been ordered to refund the money already drawn?

Mr. HALDANE

Wherever the officers did not know, or were not aware of the regulations, they will be allowed to keep the pay.

Earl WINTERTON

What I asked was that the right hon. Gentleman should answer that part of the question as to whether or not the officers had been asked to refund the pay actually drawn?

Mr. HALDANE

I cannot say. If an officer has got money to which he was not entitled he will refund it.
