§ Sir E. STRACHEYThe first part of the question should be addressed to the Scottish Office. As regards the last part of the question, the number of persons in England and Wales engaged in the trawling industry is 19,435 in 1909, and in addition to these 1,508 were occasionally employed. These figures only include those engaged in actual fishery.
§ Mr. NORMAN CRAIGasked what, according to the most recent Returns available, are the respective numbers and aggregate tonnage of English and Welsh and Scottish trawlers, respectively; and what proportion per cent. is borne to the total number and tonnage, respectively, of trawlers engaged in fishing the seas of north-west Europe by English and Welsh and Scottish trawlers, respectively?
§ Sir E. STRACHEYThe number of trawlers registered in England and Wales in 1909 was 2,821, of these 2,257 were first class boats with an aggregate tonnage of 124,079 tons. The tonnage of second-class boats is not available. There were in addition 507 boats partly engaged in trawling. The Board have no information on which they can base a reply to the last part of the question. That part of the question which refers to Scotland should be addressed to the Scottish Office.
