HC Deb 07 March 1911 vol 22 cc1015-6
Mr. ROTHSCHILD

asked whether the new pointed bullet adopted by the Home authorities has an aluminium point to the core, whereas the new pointed bullet adopted by certain foreign countries has an all-lead core; and, if so, whether this results in the English bullet being leas efficient in stopping power than that adopted by other countries?

Mr. HALDANE

The reply to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the last part of the question, from the results obtained with the new ammunition there is no reason to suppose that it is less efficient in stopping power than that adopted by foreign countries.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

How long will it be before there is a sufficient stock of the new ammunition?

Mr. HALDANE

The work is proceeding rapidly.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

What is going to be done about the rifles, as the present rifles are not sighted for it?

Mr. HALDANE

Arrangements will be made for that.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

When is the new rifle going to be sighted?

Mr. HALDANE

I hope that there will be no delay and that the provision of the ammunition and the sighting, for which arrangements are being made, will go on pari passu.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

How many years has it taken to sight the rifles in the British Army?
