HC Deb 02 March 1911 vol 22 cc545-6
Mr. CARLILE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he received from the Governor-General of Australia a telegram, dated 24th December, 1910, recommending for discussion at the approaching Colonial Conference the advisability of the reform of the present units of weights, measures, and coins; and, if so, why he omitted all reference to weights and measures when enumerating in his letter to Governors-General, etc., dated 20th January, 1911 [Cd. 5513], the list of subjects proposed by the Commonwealth for submission to the Conference?

Mr. HARCOURT

The reference to "currency and coinage" on page 12 of Cd. 5513 should have been to "coinage and measures"—the subject of the tenth Australian resolution on page 9. That resolution will be discussed with the others at the Imperial Conference.

Mr. CARLILE

Will the right hon. Gentleman send an amended list or a supplementary list to the Governors-General who may make the correction to which he has just referred with regard to weights and measures?

Mr. HARCOURT

No; it will not be necessary, because if the hon. Member looks at the Australian resolutions on page 9 he will see it is included.
