HC Deb 02 March 1911 vol 22 cc537-8
Mr. HACKETT

asked the result of the inquiries which the Estates Commissioners have directed to be made in respect to the congestion complained of in the memorials received by the Estates Commissioners from the occupiers of the congested holdings on the estate of the Earl of Normanton, situated at Bishopswood, Dundrum, county Tipperary, and the estate of Colonel Trant, situated at Ballinahow, Thurles, county Tipperary; and what steps the Estates Commissioners propose to take to remedy the congestion complained of?

Mr. BIRRELL

As regards Lord Normanton's estate the owner has lodged the necessary documents, and the lands will be inspected at an early date. As regards Colonel Trant's estate, the Estates Commissioners have asked for further particulars, and will consider the matter when they are furnished.

Mr. HACKETT

asked whether the Estates Commissioners have received a memorial from the occupiers of congested holdings on the estate of the Going Minors, situated at Ballyphilip, Ballingarry, county Tipperary; whether the tenants on the estate have expressed their desire to purchase their holdings on reasonable terms; whether within the past week several of them have received letters from Mr. Morgan, solicitor, demanding payment of full rents and arrears and costs, and threatening further proceedings unless payment is made immediately; and whether, under the circumstances, he will advise the Estates Commissioners to take prompt steps to effect an amicable arrangement on this estate?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Estates Commissioners have received the memorial referred to, and have requested the memorialists to furnish them with further particulars, so that the purchase of this estate may be considered. The Commissioners have no power to interfere with any legal proceedings which the owner may institute for the collection of the rents due by the tenants.
