HC Deb 02 March 1911 vol 22 c532
Mr. LARDNER

asked the Chief Secretary if he was aware that on the sale of the Langdale estate, in the county of Monaghan, Mary Conlon, an evicted tenant, was reinstated in her holding from which she was evicted; that she applied for a grant to enable her to restock the farm and to put the buildings into repair; and that recently the Commissioners had stated that they did not propose to take any action in reference to the matter; will he now state on what grounds the Commissioners arrived at this decision; on what date the holding was inspected on behalf of the Commissioners; when the report of the inspector was lodged with the Commissioners; and would he request the Commissioners to reconsider their decision with a view to giving this evicted tenant a fresh start?

Mr. BIRRELL

The reply to the first three paragraphs of the question is in the affirmative. The holding was inspected, but the Estates Commissioners, in the exercise of the discretion vested in them by statute, refused to make a grant in this case. They see no reason to reconsider their decision.

Mr. HAYDEN

asked if the Estates Commissioners have purchased certain untenanted lands on the Crichton estate, in the parish of Kilbride, county Roscommon; if so, do these include the lands formerly held by Dr. Dillon and Mr. D. Owens; and whether such lands will be reserved for distribution amongst the occupiers of uneconomic holdings in the district.

Mr. BIRRELL

The owner has instituted proceedings for the sale of this estate to the Estates Commissioners. Dr. Dillon and Mr. D. Owens hold certain lands on the estate, the former under lease, the latter as a yearly tenant. The estate has not yet been reached in order of priority, and, until the Commissioners have their inspector's report before them, they will not be in a position to make any further statement in the matter.
