HC Deb 29 June 1911 vol 27 c561
Mr. NEWMAN

asked what proceedings were taken by the Government in the case of John Connell, who was returned for trial on the 2nd September, 1910, by the resident magistrate at Killarney, on the charge of having, with others, assaulted and robbed John Clifford, of Glencar, at Fieries, on the 12th and 13th of August, 1910, when he was driving his cattle; and with what result?

Mr. REDMOND BARRY

The police authorities inform me that at Tralee Quarter Sessions on 24th October, 1910, "No Bill" was found against John Connell in this case, and he was discharged.

Mr. NEWMAN

asked if the police have yet made any arrests in connection with the attack on two men named Clifford and Morris and the driving of their cattle at Fieries on 11th May last; and if it is proposed to take any steps to safeguard persons who may wish to graze cattle on the farms in the possession of the Congested Districts Board?

Mr. REDMOND BARRY

No evidence was forthcoming in this case, and no arrests have been made in connection with it. All necessary protection is being and will be given to persons grazing cattle on farms in the hands of the Congested Districts Board.

Mr. NEWMAN

Is any compensation to be given to the men whose cattle were destroyed?

Mr. REDMOND BARRY

If cattle were destroyed, there may be a claim against the county.
