HC Deb 13 June 1911 vol 26 cc1448-9
Mr. ASHLEY

asked the hon. Member for Southampton, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether he is aware that during the thunderstorm on 31st May water overflowed from the drain in the courtyard by the Members' Entrance into the Lobby and into the Cloak Room; whether this has happened before during heavy rain; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this inconvenience?

The TREASURER of the HOUSEHOLD (Mr. Dudley Ward)

Although the engines and ejectors are in good working order, the heavy thunderstorm of 31st May put the drains under considerable pressure, and there was some overflowing by the Members' Entrance at a point where this has happened before during heavy rains. The drains of the building are under reconstruction, as opportunities offer; and these alterations will relieve the pressure. Meanwhile, it will be considered, if it is possible by temporary measures, to remedy the inconvenience complained of.

Mr. ASHLEY

Can the hon. Member say when opportunities offer?

Mr. DUDLEY WARD

When we have got time to do it—when the House is not in Session.
