HC Deb 26 July 1911 vol 28 cc1662-3
Mr. GINNELL

asked the Prime Minister, having regard to the anxiety and rights of all classes in Ireland in the financial treatment of their country, and the fact that Irish self-government would not be full unless it included control of all that belongs to Ireland, if he will say when and how he proposes, in preparation for the promised measure, to ascertain impartially the amount of excessive taxes of which Ireland is entitled to restitution in respect of the whole period since the union?

The PRIME MINISTER

(Mr. Asquith): I doubt the desirability of discussing a question of this kind across the floor of the House by way of question and answer.

Mr. JAMES HOPE

Has the right hon. Gentleman ascertained, impartially or otherwise, how much this country will have to contribute under the scheme?

Mr. WATT

Will the committee inquiring into the financial relations between Ireland and this country also inquire into the financial relations between Scotland and this country?

The PRIME MINISTER

I think that might form a subject of a very useful supplementary inquiry.
