§ Mr. GULLANDI beg to move, "That this House do now adjourn."
§ Sir DAVID BRYNMOR JONESI wish to call my hon. Friend's attention to the fact that this Motion for the early adjournment of the House does infringe further the rights of private Members. I have got down on the Order Paper a Bill which is practically an agreed Bill. I and my Friends whose names are on the back of the Bill have taken considerable trouble in the preparation of the measure, and we 1432 have an opportunity now of bringing it forward if the Orders of the Day were proceeded with. My hon. Friend has moved the adjournment of the House, and I wish to enter my protest against the course he has taken.
§ The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Herbert Samuel)At this period of the Session as a rule in other years Fridays are not private Members' days, and Government business takes precedence. I would also point out further to my hon. Friend that if it had been anticipated that other Bills which may have perhaps some controversial character were to be taken on the Motion of private Members, it is exceedingly probable that the Government business which has been got through so speedily might have lasted until five o'clock.
§ Sir F. BANBURYIt would have.
§ Mr. HERBERT SAMUELThere is no higher authority on these points than the hon. Baronet opposite, and I think his brief interjection is indeed a sufficient reply to my hon. Friend.
§ Question put, and agreed to.
§ Adjourned accordingly, at Twenty minute, before Two o'clock, until Monday next, 24th July.
