HC Deb 10 July 1911 vol 28 cc10-1
Mr. GREENE

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that the Civil Service Commissioners have decided to hold only one examination each year for women and girl clerkships in the Post Office; whether he will consider the desirability of continuing the old custom of holding two examinations each year; and whether he will, in any case, consider the possibility of making some arrangement whereby those candidates who would be eligible to compete at the examination usually held in the autumn, but who will have exceeded the age limit by next year, may still be given an opportunity of competing for such clerkships?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Hobhouse)

The Commissioners decided to hold only one examination each year for women and girl clerkships in the Post Office after careful consideration of all the circumstances, the needs of the service, and the cost of the examinations to the Exchequer and to candidates. Under this system every candi- date will have four opportunities of competing for one or other of these situations. Sufficient notice was given of the change to enable any prospective candidate to enter for the competition held this spring.
