asked the number of children at present maintained in the workhouses of the Metropolis and the workhouse infirmaries of the Metropolis respectively, differentiating between those over and under three years of age?

Mr. BURNS

According to the latest returns available there were on the 1st July last 21,043 children of all ages in Metropolitan Poor Law institutions, of whom 1,226 were in workhouses. The number of these children under and over three years of age in infirm wards of workhouses and in other workhouse wards, the latter term including receiving wards, were:—

In infirm wards—Children under 3 106
In infirm wards—Children over 3 34
In other wards—Children under 3 706
In other wards—Children over 3 380

Do the figures include orphans and deserted children?

All the orphans and deserted children under the Poor Law Act are included.
