§ Mr. GOLDMANasked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he can say how many inspectors are engaged in testing the granite blocks supplied for the construction of the naval works at Rosyth; and what are the qualifications and previous experience of these persons to perform these responsible duties, in connection with which great public expenditure is involved?
§ Mr. McKENNAThe granite, as well as all other materials for the Rosyth works, is inspected by the Admiralty staff employed on the works. Special inspectors are not employed for granite only. The necessary qualifications of the staff have been acquired by practical experience on other similar works.
§ Mr. FELLasked if the plans for the works at Rosyth have been amended; and if a further dock is to be commenced in addition to those comprised in the original scheme?
§ Mr. McKENNAOne graving dock was included in the original contract, but as stated in the House last July, provision would be made in the Estimates for the ensuing year for a second dock. No amendment in the Rosyth general design was necessary, as the inclusion of more than one dock was always held in contemplation.
§ Mr. BURGOYNEMay I ask whether the second dock will be completed at the identical time originally fixed for the first dock?
§ Mr. McKENNAYes; both docks will be completed in the time of the original contract.
