HC Deb 09 February 1911 vol 21 c444
Mr. SHERWELL

asked the Home Secretary if he would arrange that the particulars of registered clubs included in future issues of the Return of licensing statistics shall be so classified as to indicate the general character of the club, i.e., whether political, social, scientific, sporting, etc.?

Mr. CHURCHILL

My Department has carefully considered more than once the question of classifying registered clubs in the return which appears in the Annual Licensing Statistics; but the conclusion was that any classification which could be given would be misleading and valueless. Many clubs come under two or more heads, as, for instance, clubs which are both social and political, and others probably return themselves under wrong heads. I regret that I cannot adopt the suggested alteration.

Mr. JAMES HOPE

Cannot the return at least indicate how many clubs are carried on on premises which were formerly licensed houses?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I do not know whether that information can be obtained. If notice is given I will ascertain.
