HC Deb 09 February 1911 vol 21 c440
Mr. PAGE CROFT

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government have considered the situation arising from the action of the High Commissioner in South Africa in reprieving the sentence passed on an Umtali native by the High Court of Justice in South Africa for assault upon a white woman?

The PRIME MINISTER

I must refer the hon. Member to the answer given yesterday by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Colonies. His Majesty's Government have the fullest confidence in the judgment and discretion of the High Commissioner.

Viscount HELMSLEY

Does the right hon. Gentleman mean to say that the Government under no circumstances would review the action of the High Commissioner, seeing that in this country the prerogative of mercy is only dependent upon the advice of the responsible Minister?

Mr. CROFT

asked what number of assaults have taken place upon white women in South Africa since the reprieve of the sentence of death passed on a native?

Mr. HARCOURT

I have no official information on the subject.
